WELCOME
Well into Winter now and on the right side of the Winter Solstice – though still a fair bit of cold weather ahead. We are experiencing some lovely days in between the rain and on those days it is just beautiful in our garden setting.
We even have our firepit going.
Do you know that it is now 40 years since we planted the vineyard? So lets celebrate! Further details will be sent soon.
Read on to catch up on what’s happening.
40 YEARS OLD!
Wow! Its gone by so quickly yet so much has happened.
We planted the first vineyard area ourselves and remember walking up to the house feeling tired and ready to sleep. So when people said we were mad planting wine grapes in the area, just sometimes (when very tired) we wondered whether they were right.
The science was there though and has been demonstrated, with the Canberra Region wines punching above our weight in shows and recognition. And Pankhurst Wines has been a major contributor to that recognition. As an example, in the last Canberra and Region Wine Show we entered 10 wines and won 9 medals! The only wine not to win a medal at that show was the 2022 Arneis. It was the only one of its kind and really should not have been entered. That wine went on shortly afterwards to be judged the best Arneis in Australia by the panel for Young Gun of Wine Best Arneis in Australia. What an accolade!
IN THE VINEYARD
Pruning time! And we are well into it, with the major spur pruning areas completed and we are working through the varieties that have the Pankhurst Double Cordon Trellis System. These are the oldest of our vines and include Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Chardonnay. So being up to 40 years old, we are re-trellising the above ground parts of the vines to obtain fresh growing material and consistent productivity. Its looking good and a lot of work – definitely better than replacing the vines with young plants.
Meanwhile the sheep are enjoying the feed in the vineyard and will do so for much of the winter. They will graze down the grasses in the vineyard with the aim of having a closely-grazed almost carpet looking grass cover at the time of bud burst in late September to early October. Achieving that will assist in reducing the potential for an impact by any frosts in Spring.

Lets Celebrate 40 Years Since Our Vineyard was Planted
We are currently planning a celebration later this year and will send out an email with details.
Fathers’ Day – Sunday 6th September 2026
Lets give Dad a special day! Focussing on Cabernet Sauvignon, we will bring out a number of our past vintages to enjoy. It is very exciting to bring some of these older wines out and enjoy tasting them with other wine-lovers and discussing the different seasonal conditions over the years. Dads will be impressed!

WINTER REDS

2024 Pinot Noir
The 2024 vintage continues the style of our award-winning Pinot Noirs – soft and smooth palate with well integrated oak providing good structure and palate feel.
Bronze Medal, 2025 Canberra and Region Wine Show
2024 Sangiovese
2024 was a warmer season than the three years before it, resulting in a slightly bigger body in the 2024 Sangiovese. It retains the very smooth chianti-style characters with lovely fruit in the middle palate and smooth edges around the tongue. Bronze Medal, 2025 Canberra and Region Wine Show
2024 Tempranillo
A rich purple/brick red colour this wine jumps out at you with vibrancy. And typical of the variety this wine just complements so many foods.
Bronze Medal, 2025 Canberra and Region Wine Show
2022 Adela Sparkling Cabernet
Our 2022 Adela was made from very ripe fruit and matured in French barriques for over a year before being bottle fermented to achieve this flavoursome and bold sparkling.
