A SPRING IN OUR STEP

We can really see spring is here now – lovely sunny days with little to no wind and glorious green pastures. The cows have almost finished calving and budburst is just starting in the vineyard.

Rain would be very welcome and we are hoping for some later this week. Its been dry for the farming community across NSW, with many crops at a critical stage if they don’t get rain. We notice some of the pasture species have already gone to head due to the dry conditions. Fortunately we can irrigate and have been doing so to get moisture into the profile ahead of vineyard growth.

The forecast is for continuing dry conditions, so lets see what spring brings along and hope for a good spring (well the rest of it anyway).

The vineyard has been pruned and the material pruned off has been mulched up for return to the soil.

The early varieties – chardonnay, pinot noir and a little bit of fiano for research, have budburst already and so all is ready for the big spring and another cycle of production.

So what does this season have in store for us?

Arneis Ready for Harvest in Piedmont

2017 Arneis

Arneis (pronounced Arh-Nayze) is a variety from the Piedmont Region of northern Italy. Its name means “little rascal” in local dialect, and it almost went out of production at one point. However interest in its area of origin has been buidling up and Arneis from  Roero and Langhe are quickly gaining a name. So too is the interest in Arneis in Australia. There are not many producers and the variety overall is gaining popularity very quickly, especially in top restaurants.

The 2017 vintage is our first for Arneis and we are thrilled with the variety in our environment. The fruit was in top condition and the resulting wine shows great varietal characters, with a depth of mouthfeel and including a hint of nuts and pears.

2017 Marsanne

Marsanne originates from the northern Rhone area of France – in the St Joseph, Hermitage, Tain l’Hermitage and St Peray regions.

In Australia the benchmark producer is Chateau Tahblik and the variety is increasing rapidly in interest.

We are fascinated in the complexity that comes with this white variety – a complex and lengthy mouthfeel and a lovely softness that Marsanne exhibits. In the northern Rhone there are various approaches to production of the top Marsanne and we hope we have captured the best for our grapes. You’ll have to visit us, try it and discuss the variety with us to find out the detail.

2015 Christabel Sparkling recently released

Yes, the new sparkling Christabel is here and available. Actually, it has taken off in popularity in a few places in Sydney. It has lovely fruit characters and a great balance of acid and fruit sweetness.

Visit us and the local Hills of Hall wineries for our wine festival in the Hills of Hall in early November 2017.

We will have a great jazz band playing both days and Jacko’s special pizzas – easy and relaxing food while listening to the band – and of course trying our wines.

Food and music 12pm to 3pm both days.

The Festival weekend also marks the release of our first vintage of both the Arneis and the Marsanne. We are so excited to release these to wine lovers.

We have retired some lovely French barriques and turned them into furniture and kitchen items of real character. The free standing wine racks have proven very popular as have the various sized barrel head tables. Platters made from staves and even lazy susans made from beautiful barrel heads are a feature. These are great ideas for presents.

Winter Newsletter 2017

WELCOME

Winter is well with us and we are now experiencing some lovely white mornings! Keeps you moving when you’re out there for your 6.30am exercises doesn’t it!

Luckily the vines are asleep, so its not bothering them.

There is one important aspect – despite the low temperatures, we have been experiencing some stunning days – sunny and little wind. Its a bit easier to get people out there prunning etc in these conditions. Yes, its time for pruning the vineyard and preparation for another growing season.

SEASONAL ROUNDUP

Our 2017 harvest was fabulous – good yields and excellent quality grapes. We were a bit concerned when rain and a cold spell hit mid-harvest, but conditions dried up and ripening continued well, albeit a bit slower.

Significant in this harvest was the first substantial production from our Arneis and Marsanne blocks. We are really pleased with the condition of the fruit and the characters we are seeing in the wines.

2017 is the last season we will produce Merlot grapes. The half acre of Merlot has been cut out to make way for more Arneis. In fact it was harveted one day, and gone the next! Is that keenness or are we just well organised? In this situation we will plant rootlings, prepared for us by one of the viticultural nurseries and ready to plant this winter. Looking forward to it.

So another production cycle is complete and we are well into pruning. Its a slow process with every vine needing attention – and of course there are a lot of them. As you can imagine, the long vine canes are difficult to disentangle when pruning, so we have gone thrugh with a special machine (a barrel pruner) and chopped all those long canes into small pieces and leaving much smaller canes for the pruners to more efficiently handle.

NEW RELEASES

Exciting new varieties to be released in Spring 2017

We are so pleased to let you know that our first vintage of Arneis and Marsanne is now in botle and we will release the two varieties very soon in Spring.

A number of you have watched and been interested in how these varieties would work in our environment. I am pleased to report that both are really doing very well – good foliage growth, excellent fruit set and a good ripening. If anything, the Marsanne is enjoying our climate too much and we have to keep its tendency to produce too much fruit down and under control. It’s smaller partner, Rousanne is a quieter yielder and thats fine – the Rousanne just gives some more complexity to the Marsanne and more floral notes on the bouquet.

So look out for the release of these two!

Autumn Newsletter 2017

In the Vineyard

We are in the middle of harvest at the moment, and all is looking great – despite the cool and wet weather we have experienced. Autumn is certainly with us and ripening has slowed down quite a bit. Its looking like harvest will be completed in mid-April.

We are so happy with the quality of the fruit this year. It is disease free, in beautiful condition and has amazing flavours. We have it netted and protected from the marauding birds – its all ours!

This will be the first main harvest for our Arneis and the Marsanne/Rousanne blend and we are so looking forward to seeing these finally being harvested and fermented. Better still – in the bottle! Conditions are generally looking good, although some cooler days and showers are coiming through early this coming week. So here is hoping!
